J. Nicholas Papatones Presentation to I.T. Group Kagurazaka of August 25, 2015-one of hundreds of presentations delivered in the Greater Tokyo Area since 1996!!
This presentation was highly interactive. It brought about spirited discussion and debate about the past, present and future of Japan in its relations with foreigners, including foreigners in Japan and outside Japan alke. Below is the Thank You following the Presentation!
As Presenter, I first want to say “thank you” to 水谷時雄!
– Next- thanks to MC Hiroko Kanazawa, Translator Alain Wacziarg, and Video Specialist Miyuki Kaminuma!! Last but not least, to the the “trail blazer” Kazufumi Arai!!
The night was a Great Success-and as always, it was not an individual-it was the TEAM!!
One hour was much too brief!! It was not enough time at all !! Many names and ideas I just barely had mention. More time – next time will “take care of that”!!
One name that I did not have a chance to talk about was Ruth Benedict. At the well attended *Third Party” I did discuss Benedict! . As author of The “Chrysanthemum and the Sword” Ruth Benedict is considered, still, the foremost authority on Japanese Culture. B But she she had never visited Japan!! Benedict did not know Japanese, Ruth had never even studied the Japanese language. She had read everything there was to read in her day. Ruth Benedict had also interviewed thousands of Japanese war Prisoners during World War II. From all these experiences, not from the Japanese, she was able to develop an insight that remains unmatched,
Japanese CEO’s and Executives are in agreement!! I have trained many Japanese CEO’s of both Japanese and foreign and Japanese corporations alike!! I and been entertained by them, in a “thank”, at some of the finest places in Tokyo and beyond (Shanghai). ALl have said “of everyone Benedict got it right”!! This should force a rethinkto those traditionalists who insist that high grade language knowledge is necessary for success in Japan!!
English will continue to be the major language as Japan begrudgingly becomes global.
Another thanks to 水谷時雄 for a great “Sanjikai”!! I just barely caught the last train home. Lastly, but certainly not least, a caveat!
“Next Time we will have more time!”!
Alain, let us “Find More” in Translation!! About the Common Future!! — with Alain Wacziarg.
